So I located a large rubber firewall plug that has nothing going through it on my Jeep. October 24, I have written this note three times, and either get off into technical items not relevant to your antenna, or get lost. So, if you have a little extra time to read some theory to understand what is happening to your antenna, maybe this will help. CB and most other antennas work on a “dipole” system, and have elements that oppose each other – that is how they get the signal off into the air.
Some antennas CAN be mounted on fiberglass, because their construction has the dipole effect built into it. Many, if not most, boat antennas are designed that way, and if your CB was factory installed, it is probably that type. Coax feeding the antenna has two conductors – the center connector typically goes into the vertical element, and the braid shielding conductor goes to the magnetic mount on some or the mounting screw down gadget on an antenna intended to be mounted on a metal surface that can act as a “ground plane”.
The “ground plane” can be thought as a reflector of the vertical element. All this stuff has to be designed to be electrically in balance, and when you think about it, it is a wonder it works at all. Normally you do not have to know about that or be aware of it, because the antenna manufacturer engineers proper connections into the system. Had to past this here A thing or two about internal echo boards If you are the one of several thousand people who have internal echo boards installed inside your CB radio and the controls are located outside the CB , this little article is for you. I have to be quite direct about this and do not want to offend any CB repair shop but I constantly get radios with echo boards that are just dropped into the radio with bubble wrap , black tape , sandwich bags , I have even had them wrapped in foil.
If your tech does not understand how to install your echo board the CORRECT way then hand him a copy of this article as a guideline to help him along. First of all , remember to always use 8 volts for the supply and make sure it is regulated. Sometimes noise enters the radio from the power cord and the first thing it enters when the echo board is tied to the power plug is echo board. Some of the circuitry that is on the echo board are high gain audio amplifiers that are susceptible to very low noise.
Some of you may already be experiencing a rumble sound in your echo board now and this is one of the problems. They mostly let the coax wires as long as they come in the package and this is just like an antenna and will pick up all kinds of noise. Here is a shot with the tailgate up showing the line coming down from the truck bed and squeezing in between the corner of the rear bumper. Once under the rear bumper, the line takes a hard left towards the drivers side and simply piggybacks off of the tail light lines that are already in place. Once it hits the driver side corner of the rear bumper, you simply take a right and continue to follow those tail light lines along the inside of the frame.
I had to use a wire coat hangar to shove the line through some of the thicker stuff along the frame just where the photo cuts out on the left, but once it’s through you can continue to follow the tail light lines towards the driver seat remembering to zip tie the coax to the tail light lines the entire way. Once your coax cable reaches just below the driver seat, there is a smaller grommet that is easily pushed up in order for you to get your cable into the cab.
You are going to want to cut a small sliver into the grommet to keep the cable away from getting sliced on the metal. Silicone around the grommet to keep everything waterproof and slice-free.
